God Help The Girl

Belle & Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch has a new project. His latest venture is God Help The Girl and, in all honestly, as far as I can tell it’s pretty similar to Belle & Sebastian. That’s what I wrote as “Mary’s Market” played over my speakers for the first time. “Come Monday Night” on the other hand takes things in a slightly different direction, and it’s here where God Help The Girl sets itself apart from Belle & Sebastian.

While the instrumentation is just as orchestrated as anything from Belle & Sebastian, Murdoch’s presence on the song is otherwise very indistinct. Instead, female vocalists take the lead and ultimately dominate throughout the song. Thus with God Help The Girl, Murdoch is taking a back seat as the songs on the forthcoming self-titled LP, out June 22 of this year, will sound more like “Come Monday Night” rather than “Mary’s Market”.

States Murdoch in a piece in The Guardian: After churning out records for 13 years with Belle and Sebastian, I decided that I wanted to create a fabulous girl-group sound with my current project God Help the Girl.

For Belle & Sebastian fans, this will be an easy sell. And from the sounds pouring forth from my speakers as 1) “Mary’s Market” and 2) “Come Monday Night”, it’ll be sure to win over the rest.

God Help The Girl’s debut self-titled LP hits late this month. “Mary’s Market” is the B-side to Funny Little Frog, a 7″ that will be released in early July.
