So far, I have simply labeled show previews as “Feature Band” articles. But with my induction of the pReview to that section, I’ve added Show Preview to the Live coverage (since I don’t check out as many shows these days). And the first band to feature the title is O+S, the new project by Orenda Fink (Azure Ray, Art In Manila) and Cedric LeMoyne (aka Scalpelist, from Remy Zero). Their upcoming self-titled Saddle Creek release will be out March 24, but you Seattle folks can catch them sooner. They’ll be playing Sunset Tavern on March 11.
O+S mixes elements of shoegaze with undoubtable indie pop, though it’s all incredibly dark, and there’s a great deal of scrutiny on what melodies go where – take “The Fox”, which features minimal instrumentation but a melody of compounded vocals that build and play off each other, though all of it subtle. On the contrary, tunes like opener “New Life” and “We Do What We Want To” (mp3 included below) feature more extensive orchestration and various additional sound manipulations. No doubt, this is where Scalpelist plays his role.
Again, check out O+S at Sunset Tavern in Seattle on March 11. That’s a week from today, so you’ve got plenty of time to drop it in your schedule. I’ve also included a rundown of additional dates including SXSW. Check them out live and let me know how “Knowing Animals” sounds – it’s the one with the… well… AWESOME percussion.
