Proud Simon: Newspaper Boat [Video Review]

Proud Simon makes overtly accessible indie pop music. At least initially it’s clean, it’s smooth — contemporary almost — and it doesn’t push any boundaries. But as their recent release, Night Of Criminals continues past the first few tracks, they shed some of these elements. That being said, Proud Simon is definitely catchy and fun, as seen on their in-studio video for “Newspaper Boat”.

In a way, the smooth nature hints at an Americana influence, but it’s one of pop rather than folk. A similar effect ensues in the two songs cleared for posting, “Clockwork On And On” and “Tar Washed Ashore”, both of which are easily recognizable as Proud Simon. The shiner is the latter of the three — “Tar Washed Ashore” — for it’s slightly edgier guitars, inclusion of additional instruments, and overall super-catchy nature.

Night Of Criminals by Proud Simon is out now.

P.S. “Tales As Tall” may just steal the whole album’s show away. Albeit short, this song alone makes it worth picking up Night Of Criminals!
