The Theater Fire [Feature Band]

The Theater Fire

Written by Fense

I get a lot of email. I also get a lot of promo albums. The combination of the two mean that FensePost can sometimes be more a second job than a hobby. As much as I hate to say it, sometimes I get a lot of crap for writing overwhelmingly positive reviews and features. But the way I see it, why do I want to promote something I think is bad? In other words, I get a lot of promo crap as well. And at other times, there’s simply too much to get through. Like now, for example. My promo piles have outgrown the size of the promo rack. They now sit gathering dust on top of the rack as well as within.

To once again quote, or at least paraphrase Heroes (and I’m sure they were quoting someone else here): we are creatures of habit. We seek the familiar and we do so because it is comforting. I was not before familiar with The Theater Fire, but I am familiar with Levi Fuller, who recently sent me an email that included a note about The Theater Fire, whose album Matter And Light debuts on streets across the nation this December. That email consisted of this:

I just wanted to let you know that I will be playing at the Sunset on November 23rd with The Theater Fire (out of Texas), and local badass Barton Carroll (of Crooked Fingers, etc.). I’m really excited to play with these great folks, and also to debut my new drummer, Lindsey Reeves (of Poseur)!

First of all, a congrats is in order to Fuller and his new drummer Reeves. Second, that little note sparked a reminder — I have Matter And Light, The Theater Fire’s third LP, sitting in that dusty ol’ promo rack! That, of course, bumped the group up to the top of my pile. And now, what’s been a long time coming… my thoughts: As I listen to the album, I detect an pleasantly orchestrated style of folk not often heard these days, which is very unfortunate as The Theater Fire craft their sound quite well.

Included here are two tracks from the album, “Uncle Wayne” and “Swashbuckler Blues”, as well as a few of their other west coast dates. Check them all out below… and don’t forget to pick up Matter And Light when it hits December 9 — I’m listening to “Coyote”, track eight, at the moment and I can’t get enough! Super catchy old-time-y folk!!!

  1. “I gave her all a man could give. That’s not too much, but that’s the way it is.”

“Your legs were broken, and the driver got a gearshift up his ass.”

I can tell you I like this band already.
