Frida Hyvönen [Feature Band]

Frida Hyvönen

The first track from Silence Is Wild, the latest release by Frida Hyvönen (MySpace), reminisces on Hyvönen’s childhood. Having just discovered her heritage — she’s from Sweden — I think back to my childhood and a young Swedish boy named Peter. He was an exchange student who stayed with my family while I was in high school.

For some reason I don’t really feel like talking about music right now. I feel like blogging in the more traditional sense — you know, that narcissistic I’m gonna talk about me thing. It’s been several years since I’ve blogged about myself and I only feel slightly bad that I’m doing so in place of writing about Frida Hyvönen.

Wow, sorry about that. It’s the next day now, and I’ve made it past Hyvönen’s “Dirty Dancing”, the opening track on Silence Is Wild. But that’s what makes Hyvönen intriguing — her storytelling is extremely visual and in-depth. It’s as if she’s casually reciting a moment from her past, or a chapter from the book of her life.

The title Silence Is Wild is a bit contradictory; hear me out — in comparison to my next post, an album review on a band called Dancer Vs. Politician, Hyvönen is anything but silent. Her voice is deep and filled with power. Her ability to belt out her lyrics really sets her apart, whereas the vocals on Dancer Vs. Politician are airy and dreamy. The contrast is stark.

Hyvönen’s latest can be found on Secretly Canadian.
