Last week I got a song stuck in my head. It was a catchy tune—a melodic piece mixing folk and psychedelic sounds. The vocals had a somewhat Jeff Tweedy hint to them but with elements of Roger Waters. But it was the harmonies in the chorus and the accompanying violins that had me singing it over and over again. Damn, I thought to myself, what song is that? Don’t you hate it when that happens? I tried and tried to remember, but it just wouldn’t come to me. It must have been an hour later when a wave of revelation came over me: I realized it was the opening track to the self-titled, sophomore album by Pseudosix. That song is “Some Sort Of Revelation”. Following “Some Sort Of Revelation” are the poppy folk tunes “Under The Waves” and “Apathy and Excess”. In “…Waves”, the bassline is smooth and perfectly subtle, leaving behind any hint of potential production issues. Add to it brushed percussion and you’ve damn near hit perfection. Pseudosix has mastered the art of creating subtle yet actively catchy tunes and they continue the trend with the lazy emotive “Enclave”. “Treacherous Ways” returns to the Tweedy-esque vocals with a similar Wilco-like bassline. However, the dance dance… of the chorus brings out a unique quality for the folk-centric track in that it makes you want to do just that. The nice thing about Pseudosix is that they bring back psychedelic folk. You don’t see too many groups doing it as well as these guys of late. Granted, there’s the new Caribou, Andorra, which is phenomenal, but that’s in another league altogether as Snaith’s got a Ph.D. under his belt. Besides, it's a bit more poppy. And then there's Arthur & Yu, which is also brilliant. And finally there's Pseudosix, yet another example of the bustling independent music coming out of Portland these days. BAND LINKS TRACK LIST
